Introduction

Few crossovers can beat the BMW X6 2018 model. While this new model is not much different from its predecessors, the equipment variations available are now grouped as either base, premium, M sport or executive. The base model of the X6 comes as either a sDrive35i or the xDrive35i. The latter is rear wheel drive while the former is an all-wheel drive. Both of these are vehicles powered by a twin turbo 3.0 litre inline 6 rated engine, with 300hsp.

The xDrive50i is also an all-wheel drive and boast a 4.4 turbo V8 engine with 445hsp and 480 lb-ft of torque. It also has an 8speed automatic transmission and can move from 0-60mph in 4.7seconds. The 6 cylinder V8 engine provides adequate thrust and ensures a smooth ride. The X6 cars feel firm and stable to drive, with controlled motions. However, BMW seems not to have learnt how to make their electric steering setups engaging to the driver. This means that even though the leather steering wheel will be a comfort to drive you will not feel like the car is connected to the road.

Next is the X6M. It has a V8 engine capable of 567hsp and 533lb-ft of torque. On top of that mighty engine, the car has its suspension system and sway bars. These features when put together mean that car is super-fast, and also quite stable even when going around bends. The feel of driving the X6M is like being in a sports car with more steering feel.

The X6 lineup, unlike the X5, does not have any hybrids or diesel cars.

Exterior and interior

The opinion you form about the exterior features of the X6, depend on which angle you look at it from. If you start at the front, then you might conclude that this car is a dead ringer for the X5. However, as you begin to go around it, you will notice that windows are different. In comparison to its predecessors, the 2018 X6 is more refined and classy, managing to appear both muscular and sleek at the same time.

The interior of this model comes with a variety of finishes ranging from aluminum and wood trimmings to leather upholstery. The careful assembly of the car and its high-quality upholstery contributes to the hefty price tag with models going for even 100,000dollars.

The front part of the cabin is quite roomy with multi-adjustable sears and a good view of the road. The back seat, however, is not as comfortable especially for taller people considering the sloping roofline. This design also limits the amount of vertical space available in the boot area.

Verdict

In 2008 when the X6 was launched, it caused quite a stir. The car did not seem to fit in the category of an SUV, because its sloping roofline, which is more reminiscent of a coupe, reduced the cargo space. Additionally, it did not move like the sports sedan it so closely resembled. These two factors caused most automotive critics to assume it would not survive in the market. However, ten years later the series is still alive and releasing cars every year.
