Sure, the power is lower than the 2.4-liter it replaces, but the smaller unit has higher torque available from lower revs (2.000-4.000 rpm), which translates in much better performance on the road. We think this particular engine is a good fit for families, as it can easily merge into highway traffic and is powerful enough for overtaking. The 6-speed auto also does a good job of keeping the engine in the power band.

For those who want more performance, Chevrolet offers the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 252 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine offers almost sports car-like performance and readily pulls from a stop and can easily merge into traffic. This engine comes standard with a 9-speed automatic transmission, which offers faster shifts compared to the 6-speed.

Finally, Chevrolet offers a diesel engine – a 1.6-liter unit with 137 horsepower and meaty 240 pound-feet of torque. As with almost any turbodiesel, this one is very powerful from lower revs but loses its breath as the rpm’s rise. That said, it has enough power for easy overtaking and works great with the 6-speed automatic, while achieving amazing 40 mpg on the highway.

On the road, the Equinox is a much better car than it was before and feels more car-like, but competitors like the Mazda CX-5 still offer a more engaging driving experience. The ride quality is very good, however.

Exterior & Interior

On the outside, the Equinox takes some cues from other models in the Chevrolet range, namely the Cruze. Overall, we think that Chevrolet has designed a good looking compact SUV with elegant side lines and aggressive front end. In our opinion, it’s let down by the rear end, which looks a bit bland when compared to other models in its class.

The interior feels that’s solidly put together and the materials are also of a high-quality, but unless you opt for the pricey Premier trim, you’ll get a cabin that’s mostly in one color. This not only makes it look bland in comparison to other SUVs but cheaper than it is as well. Lower-end models come with a Denim-like fabric which is a great touch, but only on the seats and not on the dashboard. Few pieces of denim here and there would’ve made the interior much more interesting.

Despite being smaller than its predecessor, the Equinox still has an airy and comfortable interior for up to five passengers. The cargo area is smaller, however, especially when compared to cars like the Honda CR-V.

Conclusion

The Chevrolet Equinox is equipped with new turbocharged engines, all of which offer good performance bump and better fuel efficiency. Driving dynamics are improved and the ride is comfortable, and there’s a lot of space for passengers inside. It’s a shame that competitors offer more cargo space than the Equinox, but overall that doesn’t take from the fact that this is a very good compact SUV.
