With the Lexus IS 300, there’s something for everyone. Buyers have the option of picking either a relaxed, capable or refined IS for themselves. Variants include a 241 horsepower Base trim with a turbo inline-4 that comes with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel-drive and an all-wheel-drive, 6-speed automatic, V6 whose 3.5-liter generates 311 or 260 horsepower. There’s an F Sport package that adds aggressive styling, a sport-tuned ride, sharper throttle, adjustable suspension, and supportive seats. Safety features include adaptive cruise control and automated emergency braking.
The 2.0-liter turbo-4 IS 300 produces about 258 pound-feet of torque and 241 horsepower. Paired with an exclusive rear-drive system, the 8-speed automatic transmission is oddly laggy and indecisive. The paddle shifters also tend to lose track of their functionality and may require intervention. Generally, the car is a bit softer, heavier and slower than its competitors.
The next step in the hierarchy comes the IS 300 AWD. The powertrain here features a 3.5-liter, 260 horsepower V6 linked to a 6-speed automatic and an all-wheel-drive system. Numbers are similar, but the step-backward gearbox and less output make the higher price a big ask.
The IS 350 features better performance. Its 3.5-liter, 311 horsepower, 277 pound-feet of torque V6 is available with either an AWD 6-speed automatic or a rear-wheel-drive 8-speed automatic. The former is smooth and perfectly functional. The latter is quicker and sportier.
The aspirated engine is capable of building up power as revolutions increase. There are 4 modes built in the IS: Eco, Sport, Comfort, and Sport+. The Eco mode feels sluggish and watered down. Comfort is ideal for daily commute. Drivers will, however, enjoy the Sport more. The Sport+ is suitable for road courses or autocross over the weekend.
The IS 350 hits the 60 mph mark in less than 6 seconds, making it better than the 340i and C43. This, however, can’t be achieved without the F Sport Package. The Basic IS does offer a good drive too. The chassis and braking system work well to deliver a good halt along the streets. You might want to skip the all-wheel-drive IS, though, for it adds an extra 200 pounds to the vehicle, making the system deficient of some performance-enhancing qualities.
The exterior features much of what we’ve seen in other Lexus models. The grille is expressive and large as usual. The sides showcase the lean IS curves. These originate from the angular wrap at the front end and end at the tail.
The interior has materials that are kind to the hands. There’s also a squat center console, an analog clock, and a tiered dashboard that give the same visual appeal experienced in pricier cars.
The risky styling seen in the IS probably originates from the benefits Lexus has accrued with the LC Coupe. There are a few things, however, that may confuse buyers causing them to steer to German brands. The cabin is finished well and carries an audiophile charm. The F Sport package might need to add a little lumbar to match the price. The mid-range V6 also feels like a pass compared to the IS 350.
